Why I Use AI for Mockups
I design apps and websites sometimes. Before, I spend many hours on first drafts. I open design tools and start from empty screen. This is slow.
Then I start using AI for mockups. Now I get first ideas in minutes. The AI does not make the final design. But it gives me a strong start. I can edit from there.
In this post I share the prompts I use most. These help me make UI mockups and app screens fast. You can copy them and change the words for your project.
Start With a Clear Prompt
The biggest thing I learned is this. The AI needs clear words. If your prompt is vague, you get a messy screen.
So I always tell the AI three things:
- What type of app or page it is
- Who will use it
- What style I want
Here is a simple prompt I use:
> "Design a mobile app home screen for a food delivery app. Clean and modern style. Show search bar, food categories, and a list of restaurants. Use warm colors."
This gives me a good base screen. Then I ask for small changes.
Prompts for Full App Screens
Sometimes I need a whole screen with many parts. For this I give more detail. I describe each section.
Try this prompt:
> "Create a dashboard screen for a fitness app. Top shows user name and daily goal. Middle shows a chart of steps this week. Bottom shows three cards for workouts. Flat design, blue and white colors."
I found that naming each part helps a lot. The AI puts things in better order. If I just say "fitness dashboard", the result is random.
For login and sign up screens I use:
> "Design a login screen for a banking app. Minimal style. Show email field, password field, login button, and forgot password link. Soft shadows and rounded corners."
Prompts for Style and Mood
Style words change everything. The same screen can look very different with new style words.
Here are style words I like to use:
- "minimal and clean"
- "glassmorphism style"
- "dark mode with neon accents"
- "playful with bright colors"
- "corporate and simple"
I add these to any prompt. For example:
> "Design a music player app screen. Dark mode with purple accents. Show album cover, song title, play controls, and a progress bar."
In my experience, picking one clear style gives better results. If you mix too many styles, the screen looks confused.
Prompts for Web Layouts
AI is not only for mobile. I also use it for web pages. The idea is same. Describe the sections from top to bottom.
Here is one I use for landing pages:
> "Create a landing page for a SaaS tool. Top has a big headline and a sign up button. Then show three feature boxes with icons. Then a pricing section with three plans. Modern and clean, white background."
This gives me a full page layout fast. I take the parts I like and skip the rest.
Make Small Changes With Follow Up Prompts
First result is almost never perfect. This is normal. The real power is in follow up prompts.
I ask things like:
- "Make the buttons bigger."
- "Change the colors to green and gray."
- "Add a bottom navigation bar with four icons."
- "Make the layout more simple."
Small steps work better than big ones. If I change too much at once, the AI loses the good parts. One change per prompt is my rule.
Tips That Help Me Most
Here are things I learned after many tries.
First, always say the platform. Mobile and web are different. The AI needs to know.
Second, name real components. Words like "card", "nav bar", "modal", and "input field" help a lot. The AI knows these words.
Third, keep a prompt library. I save prompts that work. Then I reuse them for new projects. This saves me so much time.
Fourth, do not expect final design. AI mockups are for ideas and drafts. You still need a real design tool to finish.
Final Words
AI mockups changed how I start projects. I no longer face empty screen with no ideas. I type a prompt and get something to work with.
Start with clear prompts. Add style words. Make small changes step by step. Save the prompts that work.
Try these prompts today. Change the words for your own app. You will see how fast your first draft comes together.
