Why AI Voice Changes So Much
When I first use AI for writing, I have one big problem. Every answer sounds different. One time it is very formal. Next time it is silly and casual. My blog looked messy because of this.
The AI does not remember your style by itself. It gives you a new voice each time. So you must tell it the voice. Every single time.
In this post I share what I learn about keeping one voice. This is not about characters in stories. This is about your brand voice, your tone, your way of talking.
What Is Voice Anyway
Voice is how words feel when someone read them. It is the personality of your text.
Some brands sound friendly. Some sound smart and serious. Some sound funny. All of these are voices.
When your voice stays same, people trust you more. They feel like they know you. This is very important for blogs, emails, and social media.
Write a Voice Description First
The best trick I found is simple. Write a short description of your voice. Then paste it before every prompt.
Here is example of what I use:
"Write in a warm and simple tone. Use short sentences. Sound like a helpful friend. No big words. Be direct and honest."
I keep this in a note on my phone. I copy it every time I start a new chat. This one step fixed most of my problems.
Give Real Examples
Words are not always enough. The AI understands better when you show it.
So I give it a sample of my writing. I say, "Here is how I write. Match this style." Then I paste one paragraph I wrote before.
The AI copies the rhythm. It copies the sentence length. It copies the mood. This works much better than only describing.
In my experience, two or three examples are best. Too many can confuse it. Too few is not enough.
Set Rules for Words
Every voice has words it likes and words it hates. You should tell the AI both.
For my voice, I do not want fancy business words. So I make a small list:
- Do not use: leverage, utilize, synergy, robust
- Use instead: use, help, work, strong
This stops the AI from sounding like a boring company report. Small list, big change.
Control the Sentence Length
One thing that changes voice a lot is sentence length. Long sentences feel slow and serious. Short sentences feel fast and clear.
I like short sentences. So I ask for them directly. I say, "Keep most sentences under 15 words."
The AI listens to this well. Your text will feel more like you when the rhythm matches.
Use a System Prompt if You Can
Some tools let you set a system prompt or custom instructions. This is like a rule that stays for the whole chat.
ChatGPT has custom instructions. Claude has project settings. I put my voice description there. Then I do not need to paste it every time.
This saves me so much time. If your tool has this feature, use it. It is one of the best things you can do.
Check and Fix
Even with all these tricks, sometimes the AI drifts away. It slowly changes voice during a long chat.
So I check the output. If it sounds wrong, I tell it. I say, "This is too formal. Make it warmer and simpler."
Do not be shy to correct it many times. The AI does not get tired. Each correction teaches it more about your voice.
Make a Voice Template
After some months, I made one full template. It has everything in one place.
It has my voice description. It has two examples. It has my word rules. It has my sentence length rule.
Now I just paste this template and my request. The result is consistent almost every time. I recommend you build your own template too.
Final Thoughts
Keeping same voice is not hard. But it needs a little work each time.
Remember the main steps. Write a voice description. Give real examples. Set word rules. Control sentence length. Use system prompts. Check and fix.
When I started doing this, my writing became one clear voice. My readers noticed. My work felt more professional.
Try these tips today. Start with just the voice description. That alone will help a lot. The rest you can add slowly. Good luck with your consistent voice.
