My First Prompts Were Bad
When I started using AI, my prompts were very short. I would type things like "write email" or "give me ideas". The answers were okay. But not great.
I thought the AI was the problem. It was not. The problem was me. I did not know how to ask.
After many tries, I learned some simple things. These things changed my results a lot. Now I share them with you.
Tell the AI Who It Should Be
This is my favorite trick. You can give the AI a role.
For example, do not just say "help me with my resume". Say "You are a career coach with 10 years experience. Help me fix my resume."
When you give a role, the AI thinks in that role. The answer feels more expert. I use this all the time now.
You can try many roles. A teacher. A chef. A lawyer. A marketing person. Each one gives different style of answer.
Give More Details, Not Less
Many beginners think short prompt is better. I thought this too. It is wrong.
More details give better answers. The AI cannot read your mind. It only knows what you type.
So tell it everything. Who is the answer for? How long should it be? What tone do you want? Any examples?
Here is bad prompt:
"Write a post about coffee."
Here is better prompt:
"Write a short blog post about morning coffee. Make it friendly and fun. About 200 words. For young people who work from home."
See the difference? The second one gives the AI a clear job.
Say What You Do Not Want
Sometimes the AI gives answer with things you hate. Maybe too many big words. Maybe too formal.
You can just tell it. Say "do not use hard words". Say "no emojis please". Say "keep it simple".
I found that telling the AI what to avoid is very powerful. It saves me time. I do not have to fix things after.
Break Big Tasks Into Small Steps
When I ask for too much at one time, the answer is messy. The AI gets confused.
So now I go step by step. First I ask for an outline. Then I ask it to write one part. Then the next part.
This way, I control the result. And I can fix problems early. Small steps always work better for me.
Show an Example of What You Want
This tip is very helpful tip. If you have example, share it.
For example, say "Write in this style" and then paste some text. The AI will copy the style. It matches tone and rhythm.
This is great when you want the AI to sound like you. Or sound like some brand you like.
Ask the AI to Ask You Questions
This one surprised me. You can tell the AI to ask you first.
Try this: "Before you answer, ask me any questions you need."
The AI will ask smart things. Things you did not think about. Then it gives much better answer. I use this for big projects.
Do Not Give Up on First Try
The first answer is almost never perfect. This is normal.
Think of it like talking with person. You go back and forth. You say "make it shorter" or "add more examples" or "change the tone".
Each message makes the answer better. The magic is in the second and third try. Not the first.
I see many beginners stop after one bad answer. Do not do this. Keep talking to it.
Save Your Good Prompts
When a prompt works well, save it. I keep a simple note file with my best prompts.
Next time I need same thing, I just copy and change small parts. This saves me so much time. You do not need to start from zero every day.
Final Words
Prompt writing is a skill. Like riding bike. Bad at start, good with practice.
You do not need to be perfect. You just need to try, look at result, and fix. Do this many times.
Start with these tips. Give a role. Add details. Say what you do not want. Go step by step. And keep trying.
In my experience, small changes make big difference. Test them today. You will see your answers get much better.
