What Is a Negative Prompt
Stable Diffusion has two boxes. One is for normal prompt. The other is for negative prompt.
The normal prompt says what you want. The negative prompt says what you do not want.
This is a very simple idea. But many people forget the second box. I did too when I started.
I found that negative prompts fix a lot of problems. They make bad images good. Let me show you how.
Why Negative Prompts Matter
Sometimes your image looks almost good. But something is wrong.
Maybe the hands look strange. Maybe the face is blurry. Maybe there is extra text on the image.
You can fix these things with negative words. You just type the problem in the negative box. Then the model tries to avoid it.
In my experience, this saves a lot of time. Before, I changed the main prompt many times. Now I just add negative words. Much faster.
Basic Negative Words to Start
When I start a new image, I always use some base negative words. These work for almost everything.
Here are the ones I use most:
- blurry
- low quality
- bad anatomy
- deformed
- extra fingers
- watermark
- text
- ugly
You can copy these. Put them all in the negative box. Separate with commas.
This simple list already makes big difference. Try it and you will see cleaner images.
Fixing Common Problems
Different problems need different negative words. Let me share what I learned.
Bad hands. Hands are hard for AI. Everybody knows this. I add: bad hands, extra fingers, missing fingers, fused fingers. This helps but not always perfect. AI still struggles with hands.
Ugly faces. For portraits, I add: bad face, deformed face, asymmetric eyes, extra eyes. The faces come out much better.
Too many objects. Sometimes the image has clutter. I add: cluttered, messy, too many objects. This gives cleaner background.
Cartoon look when I want real. If you want photo but get cartoon, add: cartoon, anime, drawing, illustration, painting. Then the model stays realistic.
Wrong colors. If colors look bad, you can add: oversaturated, dull colors, or the exact color you do not want.
Do Not Add Too Much
Here is a mistake I made early. I put too many negative words.
I thought more words means better image. This is wrong.
When you add too many words, the model gets confused. Sometimes it removes things you actually wanted.
Start small. Add a few words. Look at result. Then add more if you need.
This slow way works better. Trust me. I wasted many hours before I learned this.
Match Negative to Your Style
Your negative prompt should match your goal.
If you make anime art, do not add "anime" to negative box. That sounds obvious. But people copy long negative lists from internet without reading. Then they wonder why anime is gone.
Always read your negative words. Make sure they fit what you want.
For realistic photo I use different negatives than for fantasy art. Think about your style first. Then choose words.
A Simple Example
Let me show a real example from my work.
My main prompt was: a woman drinking coffee in a cafe, morning light, photo.
First result had blurry face and strange hand. Not good.
So I added negative prompt: blurry, bad hands, extra fingers, deformed face, low quality, cartoon.
The new image was much better. Face was sharp. Hand looked normal. Same prompt, just better negatives.
This small change fixed everything. No need to rewrite main prompt.
Test and Save Your Negatives
Over time you will find negative words that work for you.
I keep a small text file. I save my best negative lists there. One for portraits. One for photos. One for art.
Then I just copy and paste. This saves time every day.
You should do this too. Build your own list slowly. It becomes very useful.
Final Thoughts
Negative prompts are simple but powerful. They tell the model what to skip.
Start with a short base list. Add words for your specific problems. Do not overload with too many words.
Read your negatives and match them to your style. Save the ones that work.
I use negative prompts in every image now. They are not optional for me. Try them and your Stable Diffusion images will get better fast.
